Dr. Caroline Peterson, DC
My dad, Dr. Ken Peterson, is a chiropractor/naturopath, and he treated all six of us kids for any ailment we suffered aside from broken bones. In the 1950s all chiropractors and naturopaths were trained in obstetrics, and my dad caught all three of my older brothers who were born at home. Quite radical for those days!
Because I was raised in a setting of natural medicine, I was pretty surprised when I arrived at chiropractic college and found that most chiropractors did not practice natural family medicine. Although not the norm, I chose to continue in my father’s footsteps and become a chiropractor who practices natural family medicine.
Since chiropractic college I have loved working with mamas and babies. I love unraveling the mystery of why people don’t feel great in their bodies. I love combining manual medicine with functional medicine (labwork, nutrition, and supplements), functional neurology (reprogramming the brain and primitive reflexes), and mind/body therapy.
The emphasis of my practice is on pre-conception through childhood. But I am happy to work with all who are ready to explore the lessons the body is teaching.
I completed chiropractic college in 1994 at Los Angeles College of Chiropractic and interned for a year at Dr. Thie’s Touch for Health Clinic in Pasadena, California. I went into practice in Eastern Oregon with my dad and with my brother Dr. Kris Peterson, who is a chiropractic internist and board ready chiropractic neurologist. Later I practiced in Portland, OR and Duneden, Florida, and have been fortunate to train with some of the top chiropractic pediatricians in the country including Carol Phillips, Claudia Arnig, and Jeanne Ohm.
In 2008 I completed my midwifery training at Maternidad la Luz in El Paso, TX. And in 2012 I finished a midwifery fellowship at Alma Midwifery in Portland, Oregon. In 2014 I retired from midwifery. I still use midwifery-derived knowledge daily and value helping women and babies come fully into their bodies and into their lives to be as powerful as they can be.
In 2008 I received my PhD in applied physical and medical anthropology, and a MPH in epidemiology from the University of South Florida, the flagship of applied anthropology programs. From there I went on to complete postdoctoral training in the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Neurology at Oregon Health & Science University as a National Institutes of Health Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) T32 Postdoctoral Research Fellow. My doctoral research focused on determining risk factors for breech presentation and discovering helpful ways to address breech presentation. My postdoctoral research compared exercise, chiropractic, and neuro-emotional technique for treating pregnancy-related low back pain.
Currently I am completing a three year speciality in functional neurology through the International Association for Functional Neurology and Rehabilitation, a two year training on pediatric special needs through MedMaps (formerly DAN), and a two year mentored specialty training with Dr. Monika Buerger in Metabolism, Methylation, Mitochondrial and other fertility and neurodevelopmental difficulties.
