Chiropractic
Chiropractic is a system of manual medicine that uses gentle forces applied to the body’s joints and tissues to promote the healing of acute and chronic complaints of the neuromusculoskeletal system. A doctor of chiropractic (DC) may employ various techniques to achieve their desired aims, including spinal and extremity manipulation, massage, muscle energy techniques, trigger point therapy, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, traction, therapeutic taping, physical therapy modalities (such as ultrasound, cold laser, microcurrent, etc.), hot/cold therapy, stretching, postural analysis, and home-care activities for the patient. A core tenant of chiropractic medicine is to balance the tone of the body’s tissues and align the joints of the spine so that a person may achieve optimal structural fitness.
A chiropractic physician focuses primarily on treating the body’s joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons, although they also look at the sum of an individual to assess problematic (or potentially problematic) areas. Some common conditions treated by DCs include: whiplash (from automobile accidents), headaches, torticollis, thoracic outlet syndrome, shoulder pain, low back pain, herniated discs, fractures, carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciosis, bunions, etc.
An initial appointment with a DC involves a thorough medical history and appropriate physical examination. Laboratory work or imaging (such as x-rays) may be ordered and/or reviewed, and initial treatment implemented. Follow up appointments evaluate the patient’s progress and help refine treatments accordingly.
