Feeling a little dried out and crackly from the summer heat and extra chlorine? Take care of your skin and hair with our super easy, blender bottle summer smoothie! This smoothie is full of collagen peptides from 100% grass-fed beef as well as marine collagen for an added boost of goodness. Collagen is essential for the health and appearance of your skin, and helps to reduce the typical signs of aging by increasing elasticity, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Collagen is also necessary for healthy hair growth and fingernails. It happens to be the most abundant protein present in the body!
The great thing about this smoothie is that it’s fast and delicious – no blender is required. Just pour it over ice and take it to the gym with you for your morning workout routine – plenty of protein, antioxidants and complex carbs for quick and sustained energy.
1 scoop Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides
1 scoop Vital Proteins Beauty Greens
1 tsp Anthocyanin Syrup
1 tablespoon ground chia seed
8 oz. dairy alternative (almond, hemp, hazelnut, macadamia or coconut milk)
Additional water for consistency
Options: Add organic fruit that is already blended – use mashed bananas, prunes or berries from the baby food aisle!
Put all ingredients in a blender bottle and shake, shake, shake! For a colder smoothie pour over ice and enjoy right away – if it sits too long the collagen will begin to gel and you may have to eat it with a spoon.

2017 has been generous with its pollen and allergens this year. Portland’s pollen counts have tipped the scales and they hit me HARD. I’ve had mild allergies since moving to Oregon, but this year I had it ALL: crazy itchy eyes, fatigue, brain fog, sneezing, runny nose, ear congestion, sore throat. Blech. My allergy regiment (below) helped tremendously, but it wasn’t quite enough – I needed acupuncture. I dilly-dallied about scheduling appointments, but once I added some allergy-focused acupuncture into the mix, my symptoms faded into the background. So for those of you also suffering from allergies, here’s what I recommend:
How does acupuncture alleviate allergy symptoms, you ask. First I boost up your Wei Qi – your Protective Qi that circulates at the surface of your body and protects you from environmental pathogens. Allergy symptoms increase when your Qi is deficient. This can result from stress, lack of sleep, external pathogens or illness, and acupuncture is a great way to revitalize your Qi. Next I consider your symptoms: If you have red, itchy eyes, a sore throat, rashes or inflammation, I’ll clear Heat and Wind from your system. If phlegm, fatigue, and brain fog are your primary issues, I’ll focus on draining Dampness, opening your sinuses, and supporting your digestion and elimination. And if you’ve got the whole shebang, well, you’ll get the Cadillac treatment to cover it all.
Vitamin C is a natural antioxidant, antitoxin, and histamine reducer. It supports the immune system, and is crucial for healthy skin, bones, and our nervous systems. Vitamin C also lowers the level of histamines in the blood stream, thus reducing allergy symptoms. When my allergies flare up, I take 3,000-6,000mg of Vitamin C each day.
The Omega-3s found in fish oil are powerful for quelling inflammation. During allergy season, they can be particularly helpful for skin rashes and sinus inflammation. I take 2,000mg per day.
For centuries stinging nettles have been used medicinally. The root is touted to treat joint pain, prostate and bladder disorders, and frequent, painful, or obstructed urination. The leaves are renowned for their effectiveness in treating allergies and inflammation, as well as skin conditions, asthma, anemia, bleeding disorders, and more. Nettles are rich in quercetin (natural antihistamine), Vitamins A & C (think immune system), iron (blood tonic), magnesium, potassium, and calcium, and are said to be 10% protein – far more than other leafy greens.
Nettles are my all-time favorite allergy recommendation because of their effectiveness and surprisingly delicious taste. Now for the tricky part…how to get stinging nettles past your sensitive little lips. It’s far easier than you think. You must wear gloves to handle raw nettles, but cooking or blending nettle leaves deactivates their sting, making the recipe possibilities endless.
1 handful raw nettle leaves (wear gloves to handle)
2-3 cups water
Bring water to a boil, add nettle leaves, cover and simmer for 10-20 minutes
You can strain out the leaves, or leave them in and eat them after drinking the tea
Add raw, local honey to sweeten 🙂
2 (gloved) handfuls fresh nettle leaves
1 cup frozen berries
1/2 banana or 1/3 avocado for creaminess
Water, or almond/coconut/hemp milk (unsweetened) to desired thickness
Raw local honey if you have a sweet tooth
Now blend again for 1-2 minutes longer, just to make sure the sting has been deactivated.
Stinging nettles are in season now, so look for fresh nettles at farmer’s markets, food co-ops, health food stores, and of course, your backyard. (Freeze dried and encapsulated nettles are beneficial too, but fresh, local nettles are far more potent.)
Because allergies create an inflammatory response in your body, be mindful of inflammatory foods in your diet that may exacerbate your symptoms. The most common offenders include: Dairy & Sugar – both increase phlegm production, Wheat, Corn, Coffee, Chocolate, and Nightshades.
Take care of yourself and come see me for allergy support 🙂
Wishing you a playful, sniffle-free summer!
Over the years I have spoken countless times to audiences large and small, local and international. Usually these talks are on topics chosen to have the most relevance to the largest number of people: How to manage thyroid issues… Treating anxiety and depression with natural therapies… Overcoming chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia… Occasionally they are on specialized topics, which are mostly relevant to a very specific audience of physicians or other scientists.
In the talk series I have coming up at PNH, I’ve done something different in my choice of topics. With each of these talks, I’m going to explore a topic that I have a personal connection to. These are topics that I think of as sitting “in the background” of our day-to-day health, each one doing its part to set the stage upon which our specific health challenges play out.
The first talk is about the health risks of exposure to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup and other herbicides. I have studied the devastating impact of this chemical on health for several years. Maria and I feel so passionately about this topic that we founded LoveYourDandelions.com as a way to educate the public about these issues. I collaborated with a researcher at MIT on an article that will be published in the next issue of Neurology and Neurobiology Journal about the role of glyphosate in causing a tragic birth defect called anencephaly. It is a condition in which the fetal brain fails to develop.
In another article coming out in the Journal of Biological Physics and Chemistry I am an author on an article exploring the role of glyphosate in causing gout and several related diseases. These are just a few of the many probable risks of even ambient exposure to this chemical. Other diseases linked to glyphosate include diabetes, MS, ALS, autism, digestive disorders and many others.
The second talk is about stress. I think most approaches to stress management are, well, wrong. There is no question that stress is taking an enormous toll on our personal and social health. But managing stress isn’t about creating islands of calm in our otherwise stressful lives. It is about discovering that our lives really aren’t stressful at all.
The third talk touches on a favorite subject of mine: stories. Since a very early age I have been fascinated by the role of allegories and stories as tools of psychological transformation. I’m going to share a few that I have found to be the most profound, in spite of (or perhaps because of) their apparent simplicity.
Finally, I’m going to talk to you about water. This year I will speak for the second time at the largest international conference on water, the Physics, Chemistry and Biology of Water held annually in Bulgaria. I want to distill the science behind structured water down to a few important principles for my talk here at PNH. I think that it is not just water that is vital to health, but our ability to generate structured water that maintains the integrity of our bodies. I’m going to describe what structured water is, how you can build it up in your body, and how it might just transform your health.
I hope you can join me for these conversations. I would be delighted to meet others with an interest in these topics, to trade questions and answers, and for us all to walk away with new ideas and new questions to explore. That, after all, is what keeps us young.

I am not uncommonly asked which supplements I think are the most important to take. Most people, oddly enough, don’t like taking a boatload of various vitamins, minerals and other nutrients every day. In fact, once optimal health is established, no one should need to take a handful of supplements.
For the most part, supplements are to fix problems in the short term, to make up for deficiencies that have been in place for a long time, or to take in large doses to get a ‘drug-like’ effect. High dose vitamin C, for example, has different properties and indications than low dose vitamin C.
Our modern world seems specially designed to negatively impact our health. While nutrient programs are always individualized for each patient, there are a few supplements that seem to me appropriate for pretty much everyone, every day.
1) Probiotic – I strongly recommend probiotics everyday. Stress, sugar, alcohol, carbohydrates, fried foods and much else deplete these bacteria, which are vital components of our health. And
while refrigerated brands are popular, I strongly recommend a spore-based probiotic. As a spore, these bacteria survive the acidic environment of the stomach and make it to the lower bowel where they colonize. The spore-based probiotics are relatively new and not easily obtained. We have the the most extensively tested spore-based probiotic in our clinic for those interested.
2) Multivitamin – There are studies showing that multivitamins don’t improve health, and detractors of alternative medicine love to cite those studies as evidence that it’s all bunk. I think this is a great illustration of the difference in quality between retail multivitamins that are used by the people in those studies, and the high-quality, professional-line multivitamins that contain no fillers and contain the activated forms of the most important nutrients.
Retail multivitamins, especially those found in the large retailers, commonly contain fillers, flowing agents, artificial colors, and sometimes even metals such as aluminum (as “aluminum lake” coloring). Why on earth would anyone want to consume a toxic heavy metal along with a supplement that is supposed to improve their health?! On top of that, retail brands often contain forms of the vitamins and minerals that are cheap to produce, but are also poorly absorbed or have low biological activity (folic acid vs 5-MTHF, cyanocobalamin vs methycobalamin, etc.).
With multivitamins, you get what you pay for. The high-quality products cost more, but each dose is delivering nutrients that your body can more readily put to use.
3) Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) – There were several good candidates to fill this third spot, but I think CoQ10 is most deserving. The reason is this: CoQ10 is an essential component of the process cells use to generate energy. Cells requiring the most ongoing energy production, like muscles and especially the heart, need the most constant supply of CoQ10.
And again, this modern world is filled with chemicals, food additives, heavy metals, stresses and even electromagnetic waves that can cripple the energy production process. On top of that, a drug taken by millions of people – statins, given to lower cholesterol – specifically depletes CoQ10. For these reasons, it makes my list as a Top 3 supplement. It is fat soluble, so it should always be taken with a meal.
No supplement will ever be a substitute for regular exercise and a diet of whole, organic food.
However, in combination with those things, I think that these three supplements are the sensible trio to best support long-term overall wellness, appropriate for just about anyone looking to support their long-term wellness.
How long have you been doing bodywork and how did you become interested in it?
“In 2003, I was involved in a car jacking and was shot with a .38. The bullet shattered half an inch of my femur and I had one surgery a year for the next four years to repair the damage. This sparked my curiosity about how amazing our bodies are and how they have the capacity to heal, even under very traumatic situations. One year from the date I was shot, I found myself enrolled in massage therapy school. Three years into being a massage therapist, I was finding that I would see the same clients, week after week, with the same general issues. I know that massage is a great healing tool, but figured there was something out there that would help produce lasting changes.
I found this with Structural Integration and in 2007 I became a Structural Integration Practitioner.”
Where did you get your training?
“I received my massage training at the Academy for Professional Careers in Boise, Idaho. I attended the Guild for Structural Integration in Boulder, Colorado and Kauai, Hawaii.”
What type of patient/condition do you like to work with?
“I enjoy working with people that have chronic pains. As someone who has experienced a tremendous amount of pain in my own body, I receive great joy from walking people through their path of pain to the other side and finding comfort in their body. It’s such a wonderful gift to be able to give to someone.”
Can you tell me a short story of an experience in your work that left you feeling inspired?
“I was taking someone through the Structural Integration series and we were in the 5th session (out of ten). This person had been in a horrible ski accident several years prior and had broken their pelvis in six places, SIX! They were told that they would never walk again and through yoga and some intense physical therapy, was able to prove their doctors were wrong. During this particular session, we were working in the pelvis and abdomen regions and this person experienced so much emotional healing through the work we were doing. It was so reaffirming that our bodies, our tissues, hold onto emotional experiences just as much as our minds do. To be able to heal emotions through a physical touch, is just an amazing thing to be able to witness. This has been one of my favorite “breakthrough” stories with a client to date. I can’t wait to share great experiences like this with you!”
Tell me about something you LOVE!
“I love my daughter, with my whole being. She bring so much joy and playfulness into my life. We love exploring together, the ocean and the forest being our favorite destinations. I love to travel and explore cultures that are new to me. I once spent two weeks in Costa Rica and had such a fun time! From visiting the volcanos, to a self-sustaining ‘dude ranch’ in the middle of the jungle (check out Rancho Margot, seriously!), to being over-charged at the panaderia on an almost daily basis- only found this out after my Spanish-speaking friend joined me one morning, such wonderful memories.”
